Why embark on the Thodorou cruise

Agioi Theodoroi, or Thodorou island, as locals call it, is a cluster of 2 small islands, Thodorou island and Glaronisi island, with everything you can dream of: azure waters, white sandy beaches and a rocky landscape. On the southern side of the island, there is a very large arched cave, making the island resemble a monster with its mouth open from afar.

To reach Thodorou island, you depart from Chania, passing right next to the famous lighthouse that serves as the landmark of the port. As you move away, you get a full view of the city of Chania, before reaching your destination in just 10 minutes. Thodorou island is always a good choice, since it is always protected from weather conditions.

Our tip: If you opt for the afternoon cruise, you can enjoy the mesmerizing sunset, when the sky takes on orange, pink and purple hues. The magical glow over the landscape and the sea will take your breath away, as you indulge in a delightful glass of wine.

Check this out: You can combine Thodorou island with Macherida beach to make the perfect pairing for unforgettable moments. Discover the Thodorou-Macherida cruise.

The waters surrounding Thodorou island are home to a variety of colorful fish species that dart among the rocks and the wonderful underwater formations. If you are lucky enough, you’ll also encounter sea turtles.

Discover a captivating realm teeming with vibrant marine life amidst the rich biodiversity of the sea. This is your chance to take out your underwater camera and capture these sea wonders.

Our tip: While exploring the seabed, try to spot the wreck of the German WWII aircraft Junker 52 resting on the bottom.

Thodorou island serves as a sanctuary for the kri-kri, the endangered wild goat of Crete. With luck and a keen eye, you might catch a glimpse of these agile goats roaming freely in their natural habitat, adding an extra layer of enchantment to your Thodorou island experience.

Usually, they are to be found on the northern part of Thodorou, known as the “Black Wall”, since it’s the wildest part of the island.

Our tip: Be on the lookout! They can be identified by their prominent straight horns, rectangular pupils and coarse hair.

Since the Minoan era, the island has been used as a sacred place. In 1574 the Venetians built 2 forts, Saint Francis and Turluru, to defend against invasion. The Ottomans took control in 1645 after a fierce battle. In 1897 Greeks, led by Timoleon Vassos, briefly reclaimed it.

The 2 forts are severely destroyed with limited access to them, due to the island’s status as a nature reserve for the kri-kri. There are some surviving walls, cistern bases and auxiliary rooms. You can also see the ruins of the Venetian castle on the southern part of the island, just above a huge cave.

Every year, during the feast of Saint Theodore, visitors arrive in ferries and boats from Platanias to participate in the festival.

Local myth: According to legend, a massive monster posed a threat to the people of Agia Marina and Platanias, close to Chania. Despite the villagers’ efforts to kill it, the creature remained unharmed. As it started nearing the village, the women prayed to save their community. Miraculously, the monster turned to stone before it could strike, its likeness still visible from the beach with its mouth open. Therefore, the island was named Thodorou, meaning gift from God.

Highly Recommend!
Through a recommendation from our villa, we hired Creta Luxury Cruises for an afternoon sunset cruise and a day cruise, both private. Everything was very professional and very nice, from the towels, to the service to the wine, to the food! We had amazing experiences! When weather posed a problem for one of our activities, the company was very good about working with us to make sure we got to do everything we wanted and even upgraded our boat. George, the captain, was a pleasure and his mother’s cooking was fabulous! 5 stars!

Spectacular Yaghting
Our vacation ended up with a day of private boating around the northwest coast of Crete. George (Giorgos) was a wonderful host and captain. We cruised to little bays and gulfs, we snorkeled in caves and even plane wrecks, the kids had a blast! Great traditional homemade food despite the limited on boat resources (Sniper). Easy going, relaxing, elegant! Price is appropriate for the service provided. Highly recommended!

The most amazing hours of my life
There are no words to express yesterday’s day. Diving off the yacht at sweet water beach, Domata, Agios Pablo’s, Marmara, Loutro, Balos…one even more beautiful than the other. Due to the professionalism and personality of captain Aggelos the atmosphere aboard the fast Axopar 37 was amazing while sailing from Sfakia to Chania, even at times when the wind hit the waves.

Awesome day on the water on Axopar
Our excursion with Creta Luxury Cruises was fantastic. We chose the boat Axopar, which was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. There was plenty of room to lounge on the bow, and plush towels were provided. We visited Balos, arriving and leaving before any tour boats showed up! We then went to Gramvousa and had time to hike up to the castle. When we returned, our captain had a delicious lunch waiting for us. We also stopped to swim in a beautiful spot close to Chania. Our captain was excellent – he got us whatever we needed, was so friendly, but also gave us space to enjoy our time as a family. The ride back to Chania was rough, but he handled the boat so well that we were comfortable. The price was expensive, but we much preferred seeing Balos and Gramvousa this way instead of on a large tour boat. Highly recommend this company. Thank you!

Booked the Lady Roula yacht for the Balos-Gramvousa all day cruise. I had questions and contacted via email. Quick, tailored and thorough responses from the company. The yacht was easy to find at the Old Town Marina in Chania. The crew were fantastic and friendly, with a perfect balance of engaging with us (attending to our needs) and allowing us to enjoy the yacht in privacy. Food provided was excellent with traditional Greek dishes and wine. The team went to the extra mile and provided a specific type of wine I requested. Would use again and recommend.

Great day of fun cruising, swimming and snorkeling
We rented the Lady Roula for a cruise to Balos and Gramvousa out of Chania in July 2023. We booked a full day trip that included plenty of snorkeling. It was a wonderful experience. The crew was very professional and helpful. The office provided timely communication. The food was excellent. We booked it for 7 people and there was plenty of room. This is not a budget yatch rental, but you get what you pay for. Will definitely utilize this company again next time we are in the Chania area. One piece of advice for other customers: if you are really into swimming and snorkeling, leave plenty of time for Gramvousa.

A fantastic day spent with Captain Kostas and his crew. The boat was great, the crew were very friendly and helpful. My family of 6 including my elderly parents and 8yr old children who the crew kept a close eye on to ensure everyone had a relaxing fantastic day.
